Travel Photographer of The Year Winners Announced, The Best Travel Photography of 2011

Each year one awards body tries to find the most talented travel photographer of the year. So who made the cut in 2011?

Well, the results are in – and the guys over at Travel Photographer of The Year (TPOTY) have officially announced the overall winner this year as Louis Montrose. The winning image (below) shows a beautiful painted girl captured in a village in Burkina Faso. All of the winning photographs this year will be put on show at the Royal Geographical Society in London from June 21st to August 19th 2012. Nicely coinciding with the London Olympics. So if you’re in the area, make sure you stop by to see these works of art in person.

Yeow Kwang Yeo, Singapore – Winner, Best Single Image in the Exotic portfolio category.
Tongi / Northern Border of Dhaka / Bangladesh. During the Muslim Congregation, local residents arrived at and left the Congregation by train. They climbed to top of the train and squeezed themselves into the train using every little space they could find.

Philip Lee Harvey, UK – Winner, Best Single Image in a Cultures & Traditions portfolio
Tribal dancer, Bafut, Cameroon.
Camera: Hasselblad H2 with Phase One P30+ digital back

 

Franco Banfi, Switzerland – Winner, Spirit of Adventure portfolio category
Lake Sassolo, Ticino, Switzerland. Scuba diver swimming between ice formations in this glacial lake.
Camera: Canon EOS-1 DS Mark II

 

Renny Whitehead, UK – Runner-up, First Shot Work, Rest, Play (beginners’ single image category)
This image was taken on the New York subway system. Whatever reasons people had for being in the subway that day, these short moments on a bench appeared to be rare moments of peace whilst cars roared on the roads above and trains thundered all around.
Camera: Canon 500d
