Announcement of new UK based Travel Blogger Conference, Traverse

Brighton pier
Traverse 2013 is an event that aims to give bloggers the chance to learn new skills and improve their existing skills with hands-on, “bring your laptop” style workshops.

It has been setup by bloggers, for bloggers who want to learn, network and have fun in the most efficient way possible.

The core of the event will be held on a Saturday with a Friday evening “Travel Massive” style welcome event in order to be as flexible as possible for those that have full-time jobs. The format should appeal to those who don’t want to take three or more days from their 20 days holiday entitlement per year or spend a large portion of their holiday budget attending a conference.

Interactive workshops will cover key travel blogging topics ranging from creative photography and pitching to fixing blog issues on WordPress. Brighton is the host city for Traverse 2013, just 45 minutes from London (£12 train ticket) and 30 minutes from Gatwick Airport makes it an extremely flexible, accessible and value for money location.

After speaking to the Conference organisers, Paul Dow (Travmonkey.com) and Michael Ball (Travel Massive), here are the reasons why you should go:

Workshops will be scheduled for different levels of experience/knowledge and bloggers will learn skills that they can apply directly to their own work.

Those attending will be encouraged to bring their own laptops and real life examples (photography, travel writing, blog setup etc) so that workshop presenters can address the real questions and skills that bloggers are seeking.

A very social conference

The event will also be the testing ground for some of the most cutting edge interactive and engaging travel social media experiments to date.

In addition to the travel blogging workshops, Traverse 2013 will be host to industry talks, workshops and networking opportunities. Traverse 2013 begins on Friday 19th April to the 21st April 2013, tickets will go on sale from today with cheaper tickets until 2013.

Interested to see who the target market for this conference will be. My guess is that it’s targeted to UK-based travel bloggers and don’t they meet up quite regularly as it is? Is this just another way for bloggers to make a few bucks…by charging other bloggers?

I reckon it’ll be an interesting concept. Looks like it’s targeted at UK-based bloggers who have professional lives as well by the sounds of things, and those who want hand on practical experience.

But yes, plenty of meet-ups in London (like, one every fortnight) and unsure how this will go when companies, such as TBEX, catch on to the concept.

      Hi Adam,

The target market are those bloggers who are looking for more of a one-to-one experience in terms of getting advice on key blogging topics. Also, for those that don’t want to spend a substantial proportion of their holiday time attending a conference but still want to get real value from it.

Learning by doing, rather than listening. We’re encouraging bloggers to bring along their laptops, writing, photography, wordpress setup etc for critique/feedback by bloggers and industry people who have experience. We believe that this is a great way to really give people value from attending an event.

We feel that bloggers have drifted away from really crafting those key skills at events and that it isn’t currently catered for.

On top of the hands on workshops, we’ll also have some great networking social events too. The whole package is great value for money.

      Thanks,

      Paul

I like the “learning by doing” philosophy. With plenty of hands-on activities I imagine this could be successful and beneficial for beginner bloggers. Starting to sound pretty similar to the Blog House in Costa Brava, but maybe less personal? Will certainly be paying attention on how Traverse progresses.

I think real workshop and coming away with action and output is a good idea. Worth giving it a whirl! I dropped note to one of the organizers as think such a good idea and have some ideas on workshop that would be happy to lead and run too!
